As a result of feedback from the community and Square Enix, the standalone benchmark was updated to allow full tweaking of graphical and performance settings, as well as services such as PhysX, HDR, Volumetric Lighting, HairWorks, etc. This would not include External Resources such as RTX, PSI, and HairWorks. DX11 (core) and DX12 (Titan) settings do not fall under this limitation.

I would love to determine how DX11 performed as opposed to DX12. In order to do this, we would need the DX12 version of the benchmark updated to remove some of the gaming bits from the benchmark sequence but still maintain the DX12 build.

For DX12, an additional version was created to run the benchmark again but place a restriction on the benchmark so that it would not include services, such as PhysX, Screen Space Reflections, etc. DX12 is backwards compatible with DX11. This means that DX12-only games and applications will still run on DX11 graphics cards and DX11 games should not expect DX12 performance larger than they saw prior to January 25, 2018.

This restriction was put in place after seeing significant drop off in DX12 performance in The Avengers, God of War, Need for Speed, and Rocksmith after the DX10->DX12 transition. If you run an application that requires significant PhysX or PSI feature support, either in the DX11 or DX12 version of the benchmark, your performance numbers would be skewed and inaccurate by Factoring the additional services into the test and missing the performance of the game itself.

I have been involved with various versions of the benchmark since its inception, and have remained on the fence as to which benchmark to trust. I’ve had arguments about the different versions, different builds, and what the real performance increase would be from a DX11 version to a DX12 version. Finally, I’ve gone with Square Enix for this release, confident enough that even if we fall short of the new benchmark, this will be a much higher quality and trustworthy benchmark than the old version.
