More than 200,000 protesters took to the streets of Tehran on Friday, the third day of nationwide protests over rising prices and dire living standards, prompting the government to close the entrances to the capital.
In a statement published in English, Iran’s state-run IRIB news agency quoted an official at the Department of Justice as saying the country’s law enforcement bodies would be able to use weapons to control the “rowdy elements” if needed.
“Anyone who disobeys the law and security forces will face legal accountability, and the judiciary, the ministry of intelligence and the armed forces will protect people,” the official was quoted as saying.
On Sunday, the authorities cut internet access to and from the country.
The protests began on November 15 in Mashhad, Iran’s second-largest city, and have spread to other towns and cities, including Tehran.
The demonstrations appear to be the largest wave of protests since the disputed presidential election in 2009.
Iran has been shaken by frequent anti-government protests since last year. A wave of unrest in December and January over a hike in fuel prices prompted 12 deaths, most of them in the city of Sari.
The protests in January were triggered by the sudden hike in fuel prices, but spiralled into wider protests against the Islamic Republic’s leadership and its contested election last year.
US President Donald Trump has been accused of colluding with foreign enemies of Iran through his support for anti-regime protesters, though his administration has denied any involvement.
The state-run IRIB news agency said in its English-language statement on Monday that the government had shut down access to foreign websites.
“The government has been taking appropriate measures in a bid to control the riots,” it quoted the official as saying. “The ministry of intelligence and the armed forces are vigilant about the situation.”
